Navigating Through Perimenopause

27 April 2025

Perimenopause is a natural sequence of events and hormonal changes that occur as a part of a woman’s cycle. Menopause occurs after 12 consecutive months without menstruation. Perimenopause refers to this transition, the period from when symptoms are first observed and ends one year after the final menstrual period, or menopause. The transition can be gradual and normally starts with changes in your cycle. It can last several years and can affect physical, emotional, mental and social well-being (World Health Organization, 2022) 1 .

How a woman feels during this time varies. Some may experience more difficult symptoms than others. Some common symptoms but not limited to are: heavy or crazy periods, breast pain, vaginal dryness, anxiety, irritability, heart palpitations, night sweats, hot flashes, insomnia and memory loss (Briden, 2021) 2 .

We must keep in mind that perimenopause is not a disease. It is a process of change in a woman, like a second puberty. If you are struggling through this time, you can actually do some changes in your diet and lifestyle that would help you have a smoother sail. Consider this time also as an inflection point for health, as it opens a window of opportunity to make small changes that could pay big to your future health (Briden, 2021) 2 .
